Power and the Color purple Part 1

The imbalance in power in relationships is due to the semi patriarchal society we live in today. For example in the Book the color purple we see how Celie is dominated by Alfred and that seemed normal because of the time that they were in. Also another example of patriarchy is when Alfred comes over to her house and is asking to essentially buy her.

Why, Why is my "son" like this
I put it in quotes because he is my son but I don't know him
He kills and murders others
John stop the crimes
come back to Mom and stay
But I am afraid that you have now gone down a path in which you cant return
I beg and plead
You can even change your name
So many mistakes were made along the way
However you can run and hide
But the truth will always be faster than you
Stop
What is it?
I'm sorry
Stop blaming white people for your problems
and take responsibility

Color Purple Final Disscussion

1a) Celie at the beginning of the books was very timid and shy because she was uneducated and was insecure. However when she married Mr._____, she became afraid and after a while became complacent with the role as almost a slave. Towards the end of the book she rose up against Mr.____ and became independent and very free spirited.
1b) Contrary to Celie, Sofia was very strong and independent until she hit a man and was jailed. This made Sofia very tired and weak until she was reunited with her family.
1c) Shug was very mean in the beginning until she met Celie. Celie almost brought out the best in her and they developed a relationship.
1d) Squeak was very reliant on harpo at the beginning and later she became more independent.
2a) At the very beginning Mr._____ was mean and abusive and later over time he became nicer and nicer and eventually did something nice for Celie.
2b) Harpo starts out as a bad child who is making Celie's life miserable and later he comes to appreciate her but is still wanting his fathers approval at all costs. Finally at the end of the book he is independent of his father and is a better person.
3) This quote most likely means that God has given us all a world with many colors and different varieties and the color purple is an exotic one where it is rare to see in nature so if you don't notice it you are not appreciating it.
4) In a way Celie is starting a new life on her own with her own children and her own family free of abuse and assault. She becomes independent from her old life much like in the beginning.
5) No matter what Celie's determination never fades, even when abused she is pursuing her education and never gives up much like the poem.

*I chose my topic because I believe that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is a threat to national security and to the rest of the world and need to be neutralized. However, I also think that the approach that the United States is taking is not the right. This also begged the question of should we be risking American lives for a war that might not solve anything? (Provide brief background info on my topic)* As much as I would like to go out and defeat ISIL myself, I feel that would be a little to risky for my personal liking. However I came up with another solution and that is educating others about this topic. This will not have a direct or immediate effect on this issue, however considering that my generation will be the future of America and as we become able to vote, we can make informed and proper decisions about this topic that will hopefully have an immediate and direct effect on the destruction of ISIL.*So what I have done is I created a Twitter page and asked questions, gave information, and created discussion topics for others to think about and re-evaluate whether we should be fighting ISIL or if they are even a threat. Also I created a survey and shared it with my peers and got 23 responses and I created the survey in such a way to test and re-test peoples knowledge of this topic. I asked questions about ISIL and then at the end of the survey I asked them to read the information I provided and then I asked them to re-take the survey. *The results from the before and after were drastic. Before for question #1 most people responded “B” and after most people responded “A”. Before for question #2 most people said “B” after half of the people kept their answers and the other half change theirs to “C” or “D”. Before for question #3 almost everyone responded “B” and after everyone responded “E”.* Before for question#4 everyone responded “YES” and after most people held their response of “YES”. *Before for question #5 most people responded “A” and after half of the people responded “C”.Before for question #7 most people said “A” and after a third of the people said “B”.*The point of this Passion Project is to inform the Public about issues that I think are important. I am not trying to change peoples political views, however I am trying to get people to re-evaluate their system on making decisions that are very important. Again this will not have an immediate or direct effect on the downfall of ISIL, however in the long run I hope that those people who took my survey can now make informed decisions about this issue later and then that will have an immediate and direct effect.

Dakota 38

3) The image that stuck with me the most was when they showed the picture of the 38 men who were hanged in Mankato because it put an image in my head about the pain that those men must have felt after walking up those stairs, or the fact that our president would execute people who were fighting for land that is rightfully theirs.

4)In Dakota 38, some of the core values such as respect and wisdom show up in the film. For example, in the beginning of the film, one of the Dakota members said "To walk in peace and harmony with every walk of life is what it means to be Dakota". This shows respect for what the tribe stands for and their customs, and it shows respect for everyone else because they are implying that peace and harmony is the center of what they do.

Precious knowledge

1)"I've never met a kid with a dysfunctional relationship with learning, but Iv'e met a lot of kids with a dysfunctional relationship with school"
I agree with this quote because children are naturally filled with wonder about the world, however simultaneously children are naturally bored easily so I believe the problem is not the kids refusal to learn, but rather the schools ignorance to the fact that students learn differently.

2)"When you grow up in a poor area you don't have the same chances as everyone else"
In regards to being children dependent  on their guardians, yes I agree. However in regards to the child's future, I disagree because the child has an opportunity to shape ones future by trying hard in school and knowing not to go down a poor path.

3) I think the first quote is powerful because it shows how the American education system needs to be reformed and how in order to do so we need to allow for some cultural diffusion, which may result in a loss of some American culture, but will unite in more so than ever.

4) I question this quote because in my experience meeting people who built companies from nothing, or who came from very little money and eventually rose up to the top one percent, they had the same educational opportunities as everyone else.

5) They gather around in the class room and have a civil discussion about grievances or issues that needs to be addressed and they all eventually unite behind a single cause.

1) Yes I do believe that this book is more an anti-war story rather than an anti-war book. I think this because he is not making the book for the sole purpose of anti-war movements, but rather telling a story about the atrocities of war and his experience with war.

2) Yes I agree that the phrase so it goes reduces the significance of death in that whenever an atrocity happens "so it goes" makes it seems as if it was just another part of the day.

3) No, I disagree in that I think that we should all have free will and not have things predetermined for ourselves and we should make our own destiny.

4)Yes I agree that there is more evidence that science fiction helped Billy re-invent himself in that he was able to use this to create new ideas without them having to be real.

5) I disagree in that they do serve a purpose other than to inspire Billy Pilgrims stories because they were used for other things.

Passage explication

In this passage, from Chapter 5 of Slaughter House Five, the author explores the comparison of science fiction to the rest of the books theme which is Free will and the destruction of war. In this comparison he uses stories and literary devices such as repetition to explain the importance of free floating ideas, and the horrors of war. At the entrance of the passage, the author is making an attempt at comparing free will to science fiction in that he starts of by saying "Rosewater who introduced Billy to science fiction". The author is trying to set precedence for support of free floating circulating ideas by allowing a out of the ordinary genre of books to be an acceptable form of literature. The author used repetition to prove that war is destructive and horrible. In the middle of the passage, he says "Rosewater, for-instance, shot a fourteen-year-old fireman, mistaking him for a German soldier. So it goes" He used the saying "So it goes" to numb the audience to the horrors of war every time a abhorrent event happens.

Slaughter House Five Blog Post #1

I think Vonnegut explains the horrors of war in a unique comedic way in that when he is pitching a book idea to one of his friends he explains the climax in a sarcastic yet humorous manner. "The irony is so great. A whole city gets burned down, and thousands and thousands of people are killed. And then this one American foot soldier is arrested in the ruins for taking a teapot." I think he re-sensitizes us to what war really is and how it is not how we see it in the movies.

I am very real-freewrite

In Vonnegut's response to the Drake school board he displays his anger with them and uses different techniques to justify his actions.

In Vonnegut's response to the Drake school board he displays his anger with them in that he uses pathos logos and ethos to do so. For example, in paragraph four of the letter he listed all of his accomplishments throughout his life which is justification and qualification to make statements later in the letter. This gave him qualification in that he was talking about America, and American politics so he is justifying his accusations by putting an emphasis on him being a World War Two veteran.

Priming for four corners protocol

1) I agree that women in the Igbo culture have no value because they are almost treated as property. For example women could be traded for other things. This shows a very dark approach to the value of women. However the reason I only agree with with rather than strongly agree is that they can be traded in this culture which shows they have a purpose.
2) I disagree that women's roles in the Igbo culture are similar to the roles of women in The Battle of Algiers because in the BoA, women were used to carry out missions such as blowing up cafes or airports, but in TFA women are used more as commodities to have and use.
3) I disagree that Okonkwo and Ali LaPointe had similar ideas on masculinity because Okonkwo was very pro male, for example when he was exiled people called his crime a women's crime and Okonkwo was very angry at that accusation. However Ali LaPointe showed little resentment towards women and seemed to be kind and generous towards them.
4) I disagree with this statement because at the beginning of the book, yes he was portrayed in a negative light but he was also considered to be a great leader.
5) I agree with this statement because in the book, the Europeans culture is not portrayed as a parasite like in many other cultures such as japan but rather respected. Also the Igbo culture is where the book is based around and it has its ups and downs.
6) I agree with this statement largely due to examples we see today in our world such as the middle east. People who live in chaos, their culture will eventually fall like everything else because chaos cannot sustain itself.
7) I agree with this statement because Okonkwo believes that he is lazy and weak which I think is true because when they converted to Christianity, he had the power to not convert but he caved in because he was weak and didn't want to deal with the consequences.
8) I agree with this because when Ikemefuna was sentenced to death, he was in shock and depressed because he didn't feel like he deserved that kind of punishment. However when Okonkwo killed another person he was not put to death rather exiled to another area.
9) I agree because when he killed that person he claimed it was an accident but he still killed someone. Also he got karma because he was know to be mean and unfriendly so he deserved all his misfortunes.
10) Overall I agree with most of these statements, however I never strongly agreed to one because I believe that for every argument there is a counter argument it is just a matter of which one is better.

1)People's behavior can change in the snap of a finger especially in social atmospheres. This variety in behavior varies from peaceful behavior to violent just because of situations people are placed in.In the book Things fall apart, the actions of some characters changed for the worse when in large social gatherings, this shows that mob mentality affected people's behavior.
2)People's behavior can and will vary due to situations they are placed in such as social gatherings. This holds true with Okonkwo because of the way he acted when placed at the funeral. He was placed in a situation where a large number of people were present and he shot another person. Also when The Umuofia Africans saw a white mans bike and were confused. This show that people's behavior changes for the worse when around other people.

TFA Microlab

1) This passage shows that women are highly valued in their society because twenty bags of cowries is a valuable purchase however the ability to purchase a woman is a sign that women are not valued
2) Women in the Ibo culture are considered to be very mistreated because of how they are looked upon by society.
3) The ceremony in chapter ten favors men in that women were there at the ceremony but looked on from the fringe which shows that they are outsides. An example of this is when women were present there would always be men with her and more men surrounding her. Women in this chapter are not supported because they were not allowed to talk or ask questions which is a sign of patriarchy. In this book, a social hierarchy is in place in which the man is on top and the woman is on bottom.\
4) Ikemefuna, before his death was very depressed because he knew that he was going to die so he went into a state of deep depression.

Single story

1) A situation when someone has applied a single story to me was when they talk about my academic performance because of my race (Asian), because there is a generalization that all Asians are smart and they should perform well in school just because they are born smart.
2) I am guilty as well of applying single stories to other people, for example when someone falls down, you get the impression that they are careless and then you associate that with them.
3) I think that power and a single story go hand and hand because the person who has the power can very heavily influence a persons vision of another.

Danger of a Single Story

The danger of a single story can influence propaganda because a single story is very bias and it will persuade the public opinion of a single group of people which sometimes is far from the truth.

Battle of Algiers

I think that the movie favors the French over the Algerians because they depicted the French as Police officers trying to keep the peace. This is shown when three Algerian women use bombs to attack three locations. The French reaction to this was not to retaliate, but to keep the peace.

Poem #3

1) Mom
2)Dad
3)Brother
4)Sister
5)Grandparents

1) My grandma's Greatest obstacle was being japanese during WWII
2)My grandma is fearless
3)Her greatest feat was raising 2 kids
4)My greatest hope for this person is that she will not be alone
5)I would like to ask why, when, where, and how

My Grandma

Fingerprints washed away like chalk on a rainy day
She hid from US soldiers in Hawaii even though she was born in the US but was of Japanese descent
She told stories of about the 40s when she had to turn her lights off because if they were on the the "Japs" knew where to bomb.

My Grandma has been through the ringer, there is no doubt
She was fearless though and it shows
She motivates me to push myself past the limit, she says "Make it count, every single !@#$%^Z& minute!" She raised two kids one of them my Mom
She said my Mom was a brat and my uncle a troublemaker
She raised these kids who as infants were "Horrific" in the middle of the Pacific.

My greatest hope for her is that she is not alone.
Her second husband died at the hands of cancer
So I want to ask if there is a God, why, when, where, and how did you do this to her
After all she has been through?
So I don't want to ask, I'd rather say I love you.

When Thanksgiving ends Christmas blows up everywhere I go. What my dad is researching I will never no. We meet in the living room to chat and talk, then my parents tell my "you on only have to go to scotia and gleason but take your dog on a walk." In the living room my family talks too much, luckily I can't hear them because airplanes fly over at dusk. I do schoolwork more than I need and when I am stressed I swear in Japanese. Its sad that people are afraid of a 20 pound cat that is too lazy and fat. This is my house filled with health everyday and I wouldn't want to have it any other way.

Poetry

1- Poetry to me is anything beautiful, not everyone thinks poetry is beautiful but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
2- I am not fond of written poetry, but poetry is not limited to paper. I feel this way because when I read written poetry it doesn't feel real it feels artificial in a way that I can't explain.
3- I think poetry has lasted so long because it is almost a puzzle in a paragraph, meaning that every sentence has multiple meanings and people find that it is enjoyable to read because of that.
